Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) the “yellow leader.” Its name refers to both the coloured interior of the root and the plant’s position of prestige among Chinese medicine practitioners. The root of Astragalus is a superior qi (energy) tonic, strengthening the body's vital force.  It nourishes the immune system and strengthens the heart and lungs. Astragalus is ideal for chronic immune deficiency (whereas Echinacea is best suited for acute immune deficiency) and fatigue.

Major Safety Issues: Not advisable in acute infections. Use cautiously with immunosuppressive drugs.

Burdock Root

Burdock (Arctium lappa), its sweet oily roots excel at adjusting the oil balance in the body. Burdock is super nutritive and due to its high carbohydrate content makes it a great ally for the digestive system. It is rich in inulin, a prebiotic that feeds your gut bacteria and supports a healthy gut microbiome.  Inulin also helps the body to regulate blood sugar levels. As Burdock is mildly bitter, it also helps to stimulate digestive secretions which improve appetite and digestion. Burdock nourishes and strengthens the body’s filtration and waste management systems (kidneys, liver, skin and lymph) to aid in cleansing the blood and supporting the flow of the lymph.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is herbal sunshine revealed through the bright orange flowers. Calendula flowers help to reduce inflammation and due to their astringent and healing properties knits tissues together and heals wounds inside and out of the body. Calendula excels at cleansing the lymphatic system and supporting the immune system. Great for colds and flus, especially when it is accompanied by fever and swollen lymph nodes. Calendula can also increase the life force in the pelvic region making is beneficial for dysmenorrhea.

Caraway (Carum carvi)

Caraway (Carum carvi), for centuries people have chewed the seeds of the Caraway plant to promote digestion. The aromatic seeds freshen the breath and soothe the digestive tract helping to relieve colic, bloating, cramps, and wind.  The oils in the Caraway seeds also help to stimulate the appetite and promote digestion.

Major Safety Issues: Avoid if known allergy to similar plants in carrot family.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is well suited to the person that internalises emotions and holds everything in. The volatile oil content provides Catnip with its gentle relaxing and calming action, making it great for nervous headaches, menstrual headaches, sleeplessness and digestive upsets such as colic, intestinal gas and spasms from the stomach to the uterus. Also great for tense, anxious kids.

Major Safety Issues: Avoid in pregnancy due to its emmenagogue and abortifacient effect.

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita)

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is well-suited to the person that is whiny complains a lot, acts childish and often blows things out of proportion. Chamomile flowers are nervous system calming and mildly sedating which can provide a better nights sleep and reduction in tension throughout the digestive tract. Chamomile’s strength is in its gentleness and can easily be used during the day.
The volatile oil content of Chamomile can also provide a pretty strong anti-inflammatory action throughout the body and provide a nice gentle aromatic bitter action which helps support healthy digestion. Making it a great choice for wind and bloating.
Due to Chamomile's high calcium phosphate content, every part of the body’s skeletal structure will benefit from drinking Chamomile, as it helps to prevent wear and tear on bone ends, is essential for the growth of teeth, hair and nails and of course plays a role in the nervous system.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) is for those that always feel the cold, get tired and run down with low immunity. Cinnamon is warming, stimulating, and sweet.  Cinnamon bark helps with excess bleeding, especially from the uterus and is also used for diarrhoea, excess gas, nausea or a slowed and weakened digestion, a dulled mind, low blood sugar levels and diabetes.

Corn silk (Zea mays)

Corn Silk (Zea mays), the Corn Silk person can be irritated with an over-acid system, hence irritation around the bladder. Corn Silk (the long shiny fibres at the top of an ear of cornis an excellent tonic for the urinary tract.  It will provide relief from urinary infections, irritation and the feeling that the urine is too hot, even burning. It is super soothing, lubricating, and healing to the lining of the urinary tract. Corn Silks diuretic action supports the body’s elimination processes helping it to rid itself of infection.

Crataeva (Crataeva nurvala)

Crataeva (Crataeva nurvala), in Ayurvedic medicine the bark has traditionally been used to heal kidney stones for more than 3,000 years. Crataeva is effective in treating kidney and prostate problems (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), infections of the urinary tract and aids in slowing down or hindering the formation of kidney and bladder stones. Crataeva is also specific in reducing inflammation and providing a soothing effect when treating conditions of the urinary organs (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and the urethra).

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), herbs with yellow flowers are generally indicated in disorders of the liver and/or gallbladder.  Dandelion leaves and roots treat a huge range of health conditions. The root supports poor liver function, gallbladder issues, constipation, skin problems and blood sugar regulation. The bitter properties of the roots help to support digestion. The leaves are a great diuretic useful for fluid retention.

Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia/purpurea)

Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia/purpurea), the warrior plant that helps to defend our immune system is indicated by its sword like florets that grow around a high seed cone with sharp spines. Echinacea root has a wide range of applications with the most well known is its ability to enhance and modulate the immune system to help fight off infections such as colds, flu and other viruses. Echinacea is most effective against acute illness when taken at the earliest hint of approaching symptoms. Echinacea is also well suited to high levels of exhaustion and fatigue.

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) as its name states this shrub is wise and noble. These antioxidant-rich, tasty berries help to fight viral infections making it effective for shortening bouts of the common cold and flu. The blue and black (not red) berries actions are quite different than that of the flowers, in that they are antioxidant and cooling, antiviral, antimicrobial and stimulating to the immune system. The berries are also considered to be a tonic, blood building, and encourages eye and heart health.

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra)

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) is the quintessential flower for fevers.  The flowers prepared as a hot herbal tea promote rapid perspiration, relax tension in the mind and muscles, and provide a peacefulness. Elderflowers anti-inflammatory action also helps to drain and open up the sinuses. The acetic acid in the flowers helps to combat viral and influenza-type infections.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) like its flower head it spreads and moves outwards, thus preventing congestion and stagnation in the centre. Fennel seeds will help to clear phlegm and ease coughs which make it ideal for congestion in the lungs, bronchitis, asthma and emphysema. Fennel’s characteristic taste comes from a constituent known as anethole which is a strong antimicrobial and works well in the gastric and urinary systems. Fennel also relieves digestive discomfort such as excessive wind, bloating, cramps, and nausea.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is well suited to people who feel chilly. Ginger is warming, calming, and a tonic to the entire digestive system.  Therefore, stimulating digestive juices improving appetite and aiding in digestion. Ginger is also a circulatory tonic, which helps to get the blood moving and bring warmth making it an excellent ally for relieving painful menstrual cramps and promoting menstruation. Ginger's anti-inflammatory action can also help to increase joint mobility in arthritic conditions by reducing the stiffness and discomfort in the affected joints.

Major Safety Issues: Caution in peptic ulceration, gallstones, and with warfarin.

Gotu Kola

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica), brainfood in a botanical form.  The leaves even resemble the cerebellum in the brain. Gotu Kola is an excellent brain tonic as it promotes clear thinking, concentration and better focus, making it a go-to for mental fatigue. The aerial parts of Gotu Kola stimulate blood flow in the capillaries, reduce venous stagnation and insufficiency making it ideal for various veins, and haemorrhoids. Gotu Kola also soothes the nervous system and calms irritated inflammation within the body.

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) the delicate beauty. Hibiscus contains a number of antioxidants that may help to protect against cell-damaging free radicals. Hibiscus petals and fruit strengthen the immune system as it is rich in Vitamin C making it ideal for colds, flu, coughs, and fever. The vitamin C content can contribute to reducing high cortisol levels which are released by the adrenal glands in response to prolonged stress levels.

Honeybush (Cyclopia intermedia)

Honeybush (Cyclopia intermedia) is so named as the flowers smell of honey.  The leaves, stems and flowers which make up the tea being imparted with sweet honey notes. The polyphenols in Honeybush provide an antioxidant activity that is able to render harmful free radicals less damaging which can help to slow down ageing and degenerative diseases. Honeybush is also a natural anti-inflammatory.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has an ancient history as a plant with a special affinity for women, bringing courage and strength to those who use it. Lavender is a relaxant that is well suited to spasmodic and tensive conditions involving nerves and muscles helping to relax the body and mind. Lavender is a great herb for those that can’t sleep because their mind is too active or they are too restless.

Lemon Balm ( Mellissa officinalis)

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is happiness in a botanical form and is useful for adults that have lost connection to their inner child. They take life way too seriously, losing their capacity to relax, let go, and simply enjoy life. Lemon Balm helps to bring back a little of that inner child.
Great for the nervous system Lemon Balm's aerial parts help to replenish, rebuild, and strengthen those frazzled nerves by providing calm to the nervous system throughout the day, without generating any kind of drowsiness. When the mind is scattered and stressed and you have difficulty concentrating beautiful Balm will also help to bring the mind down to a place of calm and focus.
The rich aromatic oils in Lemon Balm have a highly calming action on the digestive system making it helpful for digestive conditions that are stress-related, such as nausea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome or the butterflies in the stomach sensation.  It is also great for the general digestive upsets such as excess wind, bloating, cramping and general indigestion.

Lemon Grass

Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus), the stimulating oils in this grass brings clarity to the mind and awakens the senses.  As Lemon Grass is high in silica, this is ideal for strengthening connective tissue making it useful for sports injuries, sprains, internal bleeding, and bruises.  The oils in Lemon Grass possess antibacterial and painkilling properties, therefore, is used in the treatment of infections of the digestive and respiratory tract.

Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora),

Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), leaves contain the highest amount of citral of any plant. Citral is antiviral and antibacterial making it excellent when you feel a cold, flu or a sore throat coming on. Lemon Myrtle is considered to be a great source of the carotenoid, Lutein which is important for eye health, reducing inflammation and providing superior antioxidant activity. Its flavour and aroma impart a refreshingly intense citrus note.

Lemon Verbena (Aloysia triphylla)

Lemon Verbena (Aloysia triphylla) contains some lovely essential oils that provide a soothing and calming action to the stomach helping to relieve indigestion, cramps, wind and nervous conditions that often affect digestion. Lemon Verbena also has a mild action on the nervous system to help relax the body, calm the mind and lift the spirits.

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is well suited to the person that is dried out, bound up and distended in the abdomen. Licorice root is fabulous for its ability to move trapped phlegm. With its cooling and soothing action making it a must for bronchitis, chest colds, viruses, smoker's cough, emphysema and bronchiectasis just to name a few.  As an effective anti-inflammatory licorice can ease digestive inflammation and other inflammatory conditions. Wonderfully supportive to the adrenals long term use of licorice can enhance aldosterone and, therefore, raise blood pressure. Licorice is also one of natures gentlest and most effective laxatives.

Major Safety Issues: Contraindicated with high and prolonged doses in hypertension, low blood potassium, oedema, congestive heart failure.

Linden (Tilia europaea)

Linden (Tilia europaea) also known as Lime flower. The heart-shaped leaves give us a hint at Linden's ability to “gladden the heart”, uplifting you emotionally, soothing any heartache and grief. Herbalists use Linden flowers from this delightful tree for their calming and relaxing effects helping with nervousness, restlessness, muscle tension, and insomnia. It is also considered a tonic for the circulatory system. Linden's cooling properties make it an effective remedy for fever.

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is excellent for the smoker, or recent smoker who has dried out, overheated membranes. Marshmallow root is moistening, cooling, soothing, healing, and helps reduce inflammation.  Some of its many uses include peptic ulcers, ulcerative colitis, constipation, gastritis, coughs and urinary inflammation or cystitis.

Major Safety Issues: Best taken away from prescribed drugs as it may retard their absorption.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria)

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), the herbalist's bicarbonate of soda. Meadowsweet contains salicylic acid which has an aspirin-like effect that accounts for its anti-inflammatory action providing it with the ability to provide relief from swollen, stiff, and painful joints and reduce fevers.  Meadowsweet is superb for the relief of indigestion and other upper gastrointestinal conditions associated with hyperacidity, making it ideal for providing relief of peptic ulcers, gastritis and gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Major Safety Issues: Use cautiously if taking warfarin. Avoid in known salicylate sensitivity. Take away from mineral supplements.

Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is well suited for the person who is always being told "you look so tired" although once they get going, they have good endurance energy. Beautiful Nettle is rich in vitamins,minerals and iron making it a daily tonic for optimal health and nourishment. Nettle leaf works widely throughout the body, from the circulatory system, the joints, health of connective tissue, the uterus, hair, skin and nails, the muscles, and even the bones. Nettle also has a well-deserved reputation as a hemostatic (reduces bleeding) due to it abundant vitamin K content. Regular use of Nettle leaf helps maintain mental activity, support the adrenals, reduces acidity, increases energy and is an excellent tonic for the kidneys. Nettle's antihistamine properties also help reduce the symptoms of hay fever and other seasonal allergies.

Oats (Avena sativa)

Oat straw (Avena sativa) is well suited for the person who is burnout and exhausted. Oat straw is a gentle herb with an impressive mineral and vitamin profile and with regular use strengthens and nourishes the nervous system. It is a core restorative, therefore, is neither overly relaxant or stimulating in its actions but instead heals and nourishes at a deeper level. Oat straw is incredibly rich in silicic acid or silica which helps to strengthen the structural tissues of the body, mostly the hair, skin, nails and connective tissues making Oat straw excellent for split hair, nails that easily crack and poor wound healing. It is the B-vitamins in Oat straw which helps to strengthen and support the nervous system. Oat straw also makes an excellent cold herbal infusion.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is alertness without caffeine as it brings an active, awake, alert state of mind. A great replacement for those antacids. Peppermint leaves cooling, and refreshing action makes it a great settler for overloaded and windy stomachs.  The menthol oil is a valuable digestive enzyme stimulant to help support digestion.  As a source of menthol peppermint tea is great for nasal congestion that goes with a cold or flu.

Raspberry Leaves

Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus) is a well-known herb for women.  The leaves contain an alkaloid called fragarine and together with its high tannin content help relax and tone the uterine muscles.  Raspberry leaf is also used by herbalists to help promote fertility for both women and men. The high mineral and vitamin content of Raspberry leaf makes it nourishing to the entire system with its benefits reaching beyond pregnancy and fertility.

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) also known as the "King's Crown" is one of the great feel-good botanicals of nature's pharmacy. In meeting the challenges of life in today’s fast-paced, high-stress world, Rhodiola is ideal to help fight fatigue, combat stress (mental and emotional), as well as helping to improve mental performance, concentration and memory, especially when under stress, in the short term.

Rosehips (Rosa canina)

Rosehips (Rosa canina), the red-hot inflamed tissue states will be cured by fire engine red plants. The antioxidant properties of Rosehips fruit have a powerful anti-inflammatory and cooling effect making in helpful in reducing the pain and swelling associated with arthritis. Rosehips are best known for their Vitamin C content and make a great pick me up in the mid morning or mid afternoon to help with those energy slumps.

Rose (Rosa centifolia)

Rose (Rosa centifolia) the queen of flowers that represents love and romance. Prized for its ability to lift the spirits, due to its mild relaxant action and to bring awareness down from the head and into the heart. Like its cousin Hawthorn, Rose provides a tonic action on  the capillaries and vessels, strengthening their walls. Some find the taste of Rose petals too perfume-like. However, Rosa centifolia is spirited without the strong aftertaste of some other species.

Sage (Salvia officinalis)

Sage (Salvia officinalis). It's highly effective astringent property helps to dry excess mucus in the respiratory tract, reduce sweating, prevent lactation and is helpful for menopausal symptoms as it can provide a dramatic reduction in hot flushes and night sweats. Sage promotes circulation and can enhance memory and concentration. Being warming and drying Sage is ideal for treating rheumatic pains caused by cold, damp weather.

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)

Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis). Schisandra's traditional use is to prolong life, slowing the ageing process, improving mental health, and increasing energy. Schisandra is an excellent liver herb to support, detoxify and improve liver function. The astringent property of Schisandra makes it effective to reduce excessive sweating.  Schisandra is also mildly calming while providing wakefulness and focus.

Major Safety Issues: Contraindicated in pregnancy except to assist childbirth.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) nourishes exhausted adrenals, supports liver metabolism and the immune system, increases energy and endurance against stress, physically and mentally from demanding tasks and occupations, in the short term.  Siberian Ginseng is also strengthening and nourishing for the spleen and kidneys.

Major Safety Issues: Best avoided during acute phases of infections.

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is ideal for the overactive mind. Skullcap people are ideas people with their minds leaping all over the place. They love the new and the different. The aerial parts of Skullcap soothe and quieten the irritable, nervous system. It is great for restlessness, irritability, anxiousness, nervousness and wakefulness. It is also helpful for those twitchy muscles and twitching during sleep.

St Mary Thistle (Silybum marianum)

St Mary's Thistle (Silybum marianum), this sweet, oily seed acts mainly on the liver. St Mary's Thistle is a super herb for those whose livers may be at particular risk from chemical damage due to working in polluted environments, heavy alcohol intake, chemotherapy, liver disease, or heavy use of medications.  Other indications for St Mary's Thistle are haemorrhoids, constipation, and varicose veins.

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum)

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) also known as Holy basil (the queen of herbs) is considered a Rasayana herb, one that “nourishes a person’s growth to perfect health and promotes long life”. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
